Jalen Duren Dismisses False Narratives Following $200 Million Pistons Contract Extension

After a long-drawn stalemate in contract negotiations, Jalen Duren landed a $200 million contract extension with the Detroit Pistons earlier this week. Because he missed his Media Day press conference due to his restricted free agency, the team held a joint press conference to announce his extension and give him a chance to speak to the media.

Jalen Duren prepared a five-minute opening statement before taking questions from the media. Here’s a transcript of what he said, addressing his feelings about the extension and calling out fake media narratives leading up to it.

“To start it off, I would like to thank my mom. Mom, you know, she’s the backbone of everything I do. Basketball, non-basketball, life, emotions, everything. You know, I go to her with everything. The sacrifices she’s made to make this moment possible, you know, are second to none. Now it’s my turn to make her dreams a reality,” Duren said as he began his opening statement.

“My grandparents, my aunts, my brothers, my sister, all my cousins, friends, everybody who’s been there along the way, you know, I appreciate y’all. All my coaches, extended family, everybody who’s had a hand in my success and a hand in my growth and development as a player and a man, you know, I couldn’t thank y’all more.”

“You know, second, I want to thank Troy Weaver, Tom Gores, and Coach Casey for believing in me on draft night, moving up in the lottery to make my lifetime dream of playing in the NBA come true,” Jalen Duren added.

“I would say from the moment I stepped in Detroit, my first workout here- George David knows this, he knows this- but Detroit was my first workout. You know, I had four workouts. I had one with Detroit, one with OKC, San Antonio, and Portland.”

“After my workout, I told my agent this is where I wanted to be. This is where I felt at home. This is where I felt the most comfortable. And obviously, at that time, you know, Detroit wasn’t in the best state basketball-wise, but I felt the family, the atmosphere, the camaraderie, the work ethic of not only just the guys, but the whole organization. So, I felt like, you know, this was the place I needed to be.”

“But that being said, there’s been a lot of talk, speculation, false narratives around my name throughout the entire summer, as you know. So much so that it has started to even diminish my character and everything I stand for,” said Duren.

“So not only am I a professional athlete, but I’m also a son, a big brother, a little brother, a mentor, and a leader. I carry those things with pride while understanding that the betterment of myself will result in the betterment of others around me as well.”

“So I can acknowledge my flaws; more importantly, embrace them. You know, last season was obviously some of the highest moments in my career and some of my lowest. And I carry myself as a man. So I’m willing to acknowledge that, and I’m willing to turn that frustration, that anger, and whatever I felt towards my play and how things may have ended.”

“I’ve learned to take time and exert my energy into bettering my craft, enhancing my craft, enhancing my mentality, enhancing my everything about me, you know. So, with that being said, I know y’all probably realize I pivoted and I took a step back from everything.”

“That was really just to get my head right. I thought it would be beneficial for me to kind of, you know, people speak or were able to speak loosely about me, kind of create whatever narrative they wanted about me, say whatever they want to say because I didn’t say anything. But now it’s time for me to address my truth.”

“You know, obviously Detroit has become a home for me. Like I said, this is where I live full time. The city has embraced me as well as I have embraced the city. You know, I’ve built lifelong bonds and relationships with the people here.”

“And I’ve always seen myself finishing my career here, leaving a legacy in an already legendary organization and city. You know what I mean? And with that being said, I was introduced to the business side of the game,” Jalen Duren further said.

“But I do want to clear this up: I know everyone here- your colleagues and the media has a job to do, and I respect that and appreciate your commitment and dedication to your careers.”

“However, as I said, I’ve never spoken to anyone in the media, made any statements or comments about anything or everything that’s been out there. So, you can accept those as rumors, and they do not represent how I feel or what I think, you know.”

“So, please allow me to tell you first. This process took way longer than any of us really wanted. Longer than I wanted, I’m sure longer than the organization wanted, but they have a job to do, as well as my team and my agency have a job to do to make the best outcome possible for both sides. And I feel like we’ve done that,” Jalen Duren confidently said.

“At this point, you know, I’m happy, super ecstatic to be back. You know, I missed all my guys. I missed my teammates. I miss my coaches, you know, and I’m just happy to be back around everybody. I’m super excited that we were able to get something done. Super excited for the future. Super excited for the new additions to the team and, you know, ready to just put everything behind us.”

“I think, you know, there’s a business component, like we spoke on, that it took me time to realize and understand because this is my first time going through it. And, you know, as I said earlier, I can admit that I have flaws, and we all do. We’re here to work on them, and I know Detroit will continue to help me work on them and become a better man and a better player. And I think we just grow from here.”

“You know, I don’t think this should be a negative outlook or looked at as something bad has happened. I think we look at it as something great has happened. You know, I’m locked in with a team and a core who has potential that’s going through the roof, you know, and I’m super excited for what’s to come,” he concluded his opening statement.

Before the 22-year-old All-Star signed his five-year, $200 million contract extension, reports suggested things had gone sour between Jalen Duren and the Pistons over the summer. So much so that some sources also claimed that he felt disrespected by the franchise and considered betting on himself to find a way out of Detroit next summer as a free agent.

However, Jalen Duren’s words have clarified that there was no substance to those rumors, and he always envisioned playing out the rest of his career while being loyal to the Pistons, potentially even retiring there with a legacy someday.

“Yeah, I mean, as I said, nothing came from me. So everything that was being heard was speculation. You know what I mean? And granted, that’s a part of y’all’s job. And not saying y’all per se, but that’s part of the media’s job. And that’s what they’re supposed to do: speculate, build stories, create narratives.”

“And I don’t fault anybody for that. But I do know a lot of it was false, and people believe things without them coming from the source’s mouth. So there’s not much you could do about that,” Jalen Duren later explained during the press conference.

Reports also suggested that the Pistons’ owner Tom Gores stepped in to assure Duren that his family would be treated respectfully in Detroit in the future. Moreover, the front office also reportedly removed a weight clause from the contract to ensure that the money Duren was given was fully guaranteed.

Jalen Duren returned the favor by accepting a unique contract structure that initially declines in Year 2, then climbs back to a similar level by Year 5. This helps the Pistons also accommodate Ausar Thompson’s $155 million contract extension, which they signed earlier this summer.

But beyond the potential pay cut he took, the Pistons would want Duren to bounce back from his shaky 2026 playoff performance, where the All-Star averaged 10.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists while shooting 51.4% from the field.

That was nowhere close to what the franchise expected from Duren. His comments about the 2026 playoffs at the press conference clearly reflected his gratitude for this massive contract extension.

“Personally, I would say it was humbling. You know, I just need to get better. You know, I need to get better for my teammates, for my organization.”

“There was a lot of film being watched over the summer, and I was just trying to learn myself and came to that realization, looking in the mirror like, I do need to get better,” Jalen Duren admitted.

“You know, like I said, I’ve accomplished a lot of things. I’ve had, like I said, some of the highest moments in my career and some of my lowest. And that’s a part of the game. You know what I mean? Everything ain’t going to be perfect, but I’m man enough to acknowledge my flaws.”

“I’m man enough to acknowledge that I’m not perfect. And I’m also man enough to get my a– in the gym and work on those things and get better.”

“You know, I’m not trying to run from anything. I’m not running from what happened. I’m not running from what’s going on because I know that I will make things better in the future,” Jalen Duren concluded.

Jalen Duren’s new deal represents more than a massive financial commitment from the Pistons. After a turbulent summer filled with false rumors and narratives, the 22-year-old has made his stance clear while accepting responsibility for his playoff shortcomings.

With the contract now settled, Jalen Duren can shift his focus toward improving his game and helping the Pistons build a lasting contender around its young core. It will certainly be interesting to see if he can fulfill the promise of his growth potential.
