Laos president visits Azerbaijan’s parliament - Latest news from Azerbaijan

On October 13, Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with a delegation led by President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Thongloun Sisoulith, who is on an official visit to Azerbaijan to attend the upcoming CICA Summit in Baku.

Sahiba Gafarova welcomed Laos’s participation in the CICA summit and emphasized the importance of the visit, which marked the first official visit to Azerbaijan by a Lao head of state. She expressed confidence that it would open a new chapter in bilateral relations, AZERTAC reported.

The meeting underscored the crucial role of high-level contacts in advancing bilateral ties. In this context, both sides emphasized the significance of President Thongloun Sisoulith’s meetings with President Ilham Aliyev, as well as the discussions held and documents signed.

The sides also discussed interparliamentary relations and the contribution of legislative cooperation to closer bilateral ties. They noted that the two parliaments cooperate within international organizations, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network.

Recalling that he had last visited Azerbaijan 44 years ago, President Thongloun Sisoulith shared his impressions of the remarkable development Azerbaijan has undergone over the intervening years. He spoke highly of National Leader Heydar Aliyev’s valuable contributions to the development of Azerbaijan–Laos relations.

Sharing his warm impressions of his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev earlier in the day, the President of Laos reaffirmed his country's strong interest in expanding bilateral ties and exchanging experience with Azerbaijan across various fields, including interparliamentary relations, education, technology, agriculture, and tourism.

The discussion also touched upon the importance of reciprocal visits by parliamentary delegations, encouraging cooperation between parliamentary committees, and enhancing coordination on international platforms.
