Jahmyr Gibbs is putting together another outstanding season for the Detroit Lions, and his early production has put him firmly in the NFL Offensive Player of the Year conversation.
Through seven games, Gibbs has accumulated 1,058 all-purpose yards and 10 touchdowns, showcasing the versatility that makes him one of the league’s most dangerous offensive weapons.
According to Pro-Football-Reference, Gibbs has recorded 773 rushing yards at five yards per carry, along with 285 receiving yards. He has scored eight rushing touchdowns and added two receiving touchdowns, giving Detroit a dynamic threat capable of changing games both on the ground and through the air. His ability to contribute in multiple facets of the offense makes him particularly difficult for opposing defenses to contain.
Why Jahmyr Gibbs could be Offensive Player of the Year
Gibbs’ production has also translated into a strong early award case. Fox Sports listed the Lions running back as the betting favorite for the 2026 Offensive Player of the Year award ahead of Week 8, highlighting his dual-threat ability and touchdown production. Defending the award against competition from players such as Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba will require Gibbs to maintain his high level of play, but he has already established himself as a serious contender.
The numbers become even more striking when projected across a full 17-game season. If Gibbs maintained the pace outlined in the post, he would finish with approximately 2,570 all-purpose yards, including 1,877 rushing yards and 693 receiving yards. His 10 touchdowns through seven games would translate to roughly 24 over a full season. Those figures are projections rather than realistic expectations to treat as certainties, but they illustrate just how productive his opening stretch has been.
Gibbs added another milestone on Sunday, scoring his 10th touchdown of the season in Detroit’s 19-15 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. According to the Lions’ official recap, he joined Barry Sanders as the only player in franchise history to record at least 10 touchdowns in four consecutive seasons. The achievement reinforces his consistency as well as his explosive ability.
The next challenge is sustaining that production as defenses devote more attention to stopping him. Gibbs has the skill set to remain a central part of Detroit’s offense throughout the season, and his receiving ability gives him another route to impact games even when rushing lanes become harder to find. If he continues producing touchdowns while piling up yards from scrimmage, his Offensive Player of the Year candidacy will only grow stronger.
