The Little Brown Jug is staying in Minneapolis after Minnesota beat Michigan at home for the first time in nearly 50 years.
The Golden Gophers (4-1) held the Wolverines (3-2) scoreless in the second half of a 20-14 victory Saturday.
It’s Minnesota’s first home victory over Michigan since 1977, an 18-game streak that ended with Gophers fans storming the field at Huntington Bank Stadium.
“This team’s heart, their how, their spirit,” Minnesota coach PJ Fleck said. “Our community and state, they never stop believing in anything. This team is resilient. There’s pandemonium in Minneapolis right now.”
Michigan held a 14-7 lead at halftime but had the ball for only 47 seconds in the third quarter because of three consecutive turnovers, the first on a muffed punt by Andrew Marsh and then an interceptions by quarterback Bryce Underwood.
The Wolverines, who were favored by 5.5 points, started the fourth quarter on another interception by Underwood, who completed 10 of 21 passes for 101 yards and a QB rating of 69. The Wolverines fell to 0-2 in the Big Ten after last week’s 20-19 loss to Iowa on the final play.
Minnesota took the lead for good on a 3-yard TD reception by Darius Taylor from Drake Lindsey, who completed 17 of 25 passes for 136 yards.
Minnesota’s most recent win in the series that awards the Little Brown Jug was 12 years ago in Ann Arbor, and the Gophers had lost 35 of the previous 38 games against Michigan.
“Besides my marriage, my kids being born, this might be the best day in my life,” Fleck said.
