NEW YORK – Kyle A. Diamantas, the acting head of the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has Greek roots on his father’s side that can be traced specifically to the island of Chios. He is serving at a time when the federal agency is at the center of major public health decisions. Diamantas’ Greek heritage has received little attention in the American press and is not mentioned in his official biographies.
It emerges, however, from the obituary of his grandfather, William J. Diamantas, who was born on September 9, 1932, on Chios and died on August 5, 2011, at the age of 78. According to the obituary, William Diamantas’ family immigrated from Greece to New York in the 1930s.
He attended New York University (NYU) and the Columbia School of Broadcasting and initially pursued work in theater and radio. He also served in the Korean War and. In 1958, married Diana Lindsley.
