Russia to help Ghana build 2,000MW nuclear power plant – Ablakwa 3News

Russia has agreed to work with Ghana on a 2,000-megawatt nuclear power plant, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has said.
The plant was one of six commitments from President John Mahama’s talks with President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow on Friday.
Ablakwa said in a statement on Saturday that the project would strengthen Ghana’s energy security and industrialisation. He gave no cost, site or timeline.
Energy Minister John Jinapor inaugurated a new board for Nuclear Power Ghana last November, tasking it with adding nuclear power to the country’s energy mix.
In 2024, Nuclear Power Ghana signed a framework agreement with a Chinese company for the construction of a reactor.
The two countries also agreed a new defence pact covering military equipment for the Ghana Armed Forces.
Ablakwa said Putin had barred Ghanaians from taking part in Russia’s war in Ukraine, whether through irregular recruitment or voluntary enlistment.
Russia will also support Ghana’s agriculture, including grain yields and fertiliser supplies, and offer more scholarships to Ghanaian students, the statement said.
The two sides agreed to revive their Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation, with Russia hosting its next session in the coming weeks.
