Freeze warning, frost advisory in Michigan's U.P. What to do now

Michigan residents in the Upper Peninsula are likely to wake up to frost on their windshields and lawns on Tuesday morning, Sept. 22.

Forecasters have issued frost advisories and freeze warnings for the overnight hours Monday night into Tuesday morning.

"Areas of frost are likely tonight for most of the U.P., aside from the immediate lakeshores and Keweenaw. Some interior areas will see lows below freezing. Take action to prevent above-ground outdoor pipes from freezing, and bring sensitive plants inside or cover them," the Marquette National Weather Service office said on X on Sept. 21.

Most of the U.P. is under a frost advisory until Tuesday morning, Sept. 22, with lows down to 33 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Keweenaw Peninsula is excluded from the advisory at this time.

Officials issued a freeze warning for Houghton, Baraga and Iron counties, impacting cities and villages like Kenton, Iron River, Sidnaw and L'Anse for 30-degree lows.

"To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing," the NWS said.
